Vervang een fietsband
Verwijder een versleten of beschadigde fietsband en monteer een nieuwe correct.
Goal: Een nieuwe band op een wielvelg monteren zodat de band veilig is en op de juiste spanning staat.
Minimum practice time: 0.5 hours
Materials needed
- • Replacement tyre (correct size)
- • New inner tube
- • Tyre levers (2)
- • Bicycle pump
- • Tyre pressure gauge
Safety first
- ! Check the tyre sidewall for the correct pressure range before inflating
- ! Do not use metal tyre levers to seat the second tyre bead — they puncture the tube
- ! Inspect the inside of the tyre carefully before fitting the new tube
Steps7 total
- 1
Remove the wheel and deflate
Remove the wheel from the bike. Let out all air by pressing the valve core.
Done when:The wheel is off the bike and the tyre is fully deflated.
Why:You need a flat tyre to remove it safely from the rim.
- 2
Remove the old tyre and tube
Use tyre levers to remove both sides of the tyre. Remove and discard the old inner tube.
Done when:The tyre and tube are fully removed from the rim.
Why:You need a bare rim to fit the new tyre correctly.
- 3
Check inside the tyre for the cause
Run your fingers slowly around the inside of the old tyre. Feel for sharp objects such as glass or a nail.
Done when:No sharp objects remain inside the tyre.
Why:A sharp object left behind will puncture the new tube immediately.
- 4
Fit one bead of the new tyre
Push one side of the new tyre onto the rim all the way around. Use your thumbs. Start at the valve hole.
Done when:One full side of the new tyre sits inside the rim.
Why:One side seated first gives you room to seat the tube correctly.
- 5
Insert the inner tube
Inflate the new tube slightly so it holds its shape. Push the valve through the rim hole. Tuck the tube inside the tyre all the way around.
Done when:The tube sits evenly inside the tyre with no folds.
Why:A correctly seated tube will not be pinched when the tyre is inflated.
- 6
Seat the second side of the tyre
Push the remaining tyre bead onto the rim with your thumbs. Work from the valve outward on both sides. Avoid using tyre levers.
Done when:The full tyre bead is seated inside the rim with the tube inside.
Why:Using tyre levers risks puncturing the new tube.
- 7
Inflate and check
Inflate to the pressure shown on the tyre sidewall. Check the tyre is centred on the rim and round. Refit the wheel to the bike.
Done when:Tyre is at correct pressure, evenly seated and the wheel is back on the bike.
Why:Correct pressure and seating ensures a safe and comfortable ride.
Common mistakes to avoid
- × Fitting the tyre in the wrong direction of travel
- × Forgetting to check inside the old tyre for sharp objects
- × Using a tyre lever to seat the final bead and puncturing the new tube
- × Not inflating to the correct pressure
Supervisor checklist
Confirm each item is completed before signing off.
- Old tyre and tube fully removed
- Inside of tyre checked for sharp objects
- New tyre direction of travel is correct
- Tube fitted without folds
- Tyre bead seated evenly all around
- Tyre inflated to correct pressure
Evidence required
- • New tyre holds correct pressure after 30 minutes
- • Supervisor sign-off
- • Photo of completed installation
