Lichtschalter installieren

depublished

Einen einpoligen Einwegschalter in einer vorbereiteten Montageunterputzdose verdrahten und befestigen.

Goal: Einen Lichtschalter so installieren, dass sich das Licht beim Betätigen korrekt ein- und ausschaltet.

Minimum practice time: 1.5 hours

Materials needed

  • Single-gang one-way light switch
  • Mounting box
  • Cable (1 mm² twin and earth)
  • Brown sleeving or tape (for grey/black conductors)
  • Screwdrivers
  • Wire strippers
  • Test lamp or voltage indicator

Safety first

  • ! Carry out full safe isolation before any wiring work
  • ! Mark any grey or black conductors with brown tape — they are live when the switch is on
  • ! Test the switch function before closing the ceiling rose or fitting any light fittings

Steps7 total

  1. 1

    Confirm safe isolation

Carry out the full safe isolation procedure. Confirm zero voltage at the switch position.

Done when:The circuit is confirmed dead with a voltage indicator.

Why:Working on a live switch circuit risks electrocution.

  2. 2

    Prepare the switch box

Check the mounting box is secure. Feed the cable through the knockout. Apply conduit bushes to protect the cable insulation.

Done when:The cable enters the box safely without touching sharp edges.

Why:Sharp edges cut through insulation and cause faults.

  3. 3

Connect the brown wire to COM

Insert the brown (switch live) conductor into the COM terminal. Tighten firmly.

Done when:The brown wire is secure in the COM terminal.

Why:COM is the common feed — the supply to the switch.

  4. 4

Connect the grey wire to L1

Insert the grey (switched live) conductor into the L1 terminal. Tighten firmly. If the wire is black, mark it with brown tape to indicate it is a live conductor.

Done when:The grey wire is secure in the L1 terminal.

Why:L1 carries current to the light when the switch is on.

  5. 5

    Connect the earth wire

Fit a green/yellow sleeve to the earth wire. Insert into the earth terminal and tighten.

Done when:The earth wire is secure in the earth terminal with a green/yellow sleeve.

Why:An earth connection protects against shock if a fault occurs.

  6. 6

    Fit the switch faceplate

Fold cables neatly into the box. Fit the switch faceplate. Tighten both screws evenly. Check it is flat and level.

Done when:The switch is secure, flat and level.

Why:A level switch looks professional and is less likely to work loose.

  7. 7

    Test the switch function

Restore power. Operate the switch in both positions. Check the light comes on and off correctly.

Done when:The light turns on and off with the switch in each position.

Why:A function test confirms the circuit is wired correctly.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • × Connecting conductors to the wrong terminals (COM and L1 reversed)
  • × Not marking the grey/black "switched live" conductor with brown tape
  • × Fitting the faceplate with loose terminal screws inside
  • × Not testing the switch function after installation

Supervisor checklist

Confirm each item is completed before signing off.

  • Safe isolation confirmed before starting
  • Brown wire connected to COM, grey/black conductor connected to L1
  • Grey/black conductor marked with brown tape
  • Earth wire connected and sleeved
  • Faceplate flat and secure
  • Switch function tested — light on and off confirmed

Evidence required

  • Photo of completed wiring before faceplate fitted
  • Supervisor witness confirms light switch function test
  • Supervisor sign-off
